| The Malta Song for Europe Festival was held on Saturday 19 February at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. This year, a total of 186 songs were submitted for the competition.
In the first selection phase, a jury listened to all of the songs twice on CD before choosing 50 songs for the second phase.
In the second phase, another jury heard all 50 songs twice, first on CD, then the live performances. They then selected 22 songs that would compete in the final.
In the final, which was televised on the National Television Station, all 22 songs were sung live in front of an audience at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. This year, the winning song was chosen solely by televoting and SMS voting. In all, we had 62,857 votes (of which 32,333 were via televoting and 30,524 SMS voting).
The winning song, ‘Angel’, was written and performed by Chiara and received 11,935 votes. Second-placed ‘Déjà vu’ received 11,369 votes. The music was written by Philip Vella, lyrics were by Gerard James Borg and the song was performed by Olivia Lewis. ‘You’ (written by Augusto Cardinali, lyrics by John Attard and performed by J. Anvil) was placed third with 5,903 votes. |
