| Young duo, Julie & Ludwig are a vocal pleasure; their compatibility is impeccable. Their voices hit notes few singers are capable of and this year they will represent Malta at Eurovision in Istanbul with the song, “On Again…Off Again.”
The song was especially written for them by composer Philip Vella and lyricist Gerard James Borg to emphasis the duo’s great vocal talent.
Julie & Ludwig won the chance to represent their country at Eurovision after winning the “Malta Song for Europe Festival.” The contest -- Malta’s Eurovision prelims -- was held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on 13 and 14 February 2004.
Julie & Ludwig won an extraordinary number of public votes: the pair received more than double the number of votes received by the song which came second.
Julie & Ludwig have been singing as a duo for three years. They have won several festivals including:
* Malta Song for Europe Festival 2004 1st place
* L-Ghanja tal-Poplu, 2003 1st place
* Discovery Festival Bulgaria 2003 1st place / 2nd Best Singers
* Malta Song for Europe Festival 2003 4th place
* Festival Internazzjonali tal-Kanzunetta Maltija 2002 2nd place / 1st place public vote
Ludwig started playing the Piano aged just six and began singing as a choirboy with St.John’s Cathedral Choir under the tuition of Fr. Albert Borg OSA.
However, his career really took off after maestro, Joe Brown discovered Ludwig’s talent and asked him to play the solo part in the musical, “Queen of Hearts.”
Ludwig has since starred in several musicals including: “Dedication to Andrew Lloyd Weber,” “The Ragged Child,” “Young and Powerful,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “All You Need is Love,” “Beatle Mania,” “The Music Of Andrew Lloyd Webber,” “Christmas with the Musicals,” “Music of the Night” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
Ludwig also played the role of Gaston in “Beauty and the Beast” and starred as Annas in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
Julie was just four-years-old when she started singing in her local church choir. Later she learnt to play the Piano and started studying lyric singing. Aged 12, Julie began entering local festivals.
Her talent was immediately spotted by local composers and their support and further participation in local festivals has given Julie the confidence to take on whatever musical challenge comes her way.
She has had solo roles in several musicals including, “Tkun Darb’ohra Mikelang,” “Diana Queen of Hearts,” “Dedication to Andrew Lloyd Weber,” “Delicately Powerful,” “The Ragged Child,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “All You Need is Love,” “Beatle Mania,” “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber,” “Christmas with the Musicals,” “Music of the Night” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” It was during one of these performances that the couple met and decided to form a duo.
Julie and Ludwig are both graduates of the University of Malta. Julie holds a BA (Hons.) degree in Sociology. Ludwig is a graduate of Education and teaches P.S.D. He also teaches voice training at the Masquerade Theatre Company. Both still study lyric singing.
Julie and Ludwig are also currently resident singers on Malta’s popular Saturday afternoon programme, “Is-Sibt.” They’re looking forward to representing Malta at Eurovision and hope to see their song placed in the final top ten. |
